Fly in the face of something
Formal / Neutral
Meaning: To openly oppose, defy or act against accepted ideas, rules, traditions or expectations.
Explanation of the Idiom:
The idiom ‘fly in the face of something’ has been in English language since at least the 16th century. The imagery is physical and vivid; just as something suddenly flying into your face would be startling and disruptive, to fly in the face of established norms or facts means to challenge or contradict them directly.
Its earliest uses were literal, describing birds or insects darting toward a person’s face. By the late 1500s, however, the phrase had taken on a figurative meaning in English literature: to act in bold defiance of authority, logic or custom.
In modern contexts, this idiom is frequently used in journalism, politics, law and academic writing.
For instance, a policy that contradicts scientific evidence, a decision that ignores long-standing traditions or behaviour that defies social norms can all be described as ‘flying in the face of’ something.
This idiom emphasises not only contradiction but also the boldness or audacity of the act. To ‘fly in the face of’ is to go against what most would consider natural, sensible or proper.
Example Sentences:
Ignoring climate science flies in the face of overwhelming evidence.
His casual attitude toward safety rules flies in the face of company policy.
The new law flies in the face of the country’s democratic traditions.
Refusing to educate children flies in the face of basic human rights and constitutional duties.

Thanks to Veranda RACE, I've cracked three Bank Exams - IBPS PO, SBI PO and IBPS Clerk. Coming a village in Tuticorin, Veranda RACE faculty helped me understand the syllabus and topics of Bank Exams. With full focus on Bank exams, I used to prepare daily in the computer lab and library with constant support from my Bank mentors. They cleared all my doubts without any hesitation.
I prepared for Bank Exams in Veranda RACE’s Tambaram branch. They trained me specifically for the ‘Agriculture Insurance Company’ Exam. I’m happy that I could contribute more to the profession of my choice! Thanks to the faculty and mentors of Veranda RACE!
Preparing from Tirunelveli, I want to thank my faculty for the constant support and motivation to crack the LIC ADO Exam. The lab facilities were top notch and I used to prepare writing online mock tests at the computer lab. This was the major reason for cracking the exam in the first attempt. Thanks, Veranda RACE!
