Hedge your bets
Formal / Neutral
Meaning: To reduce risk or avoid commitment by supporting multiple options at once, so that at least one choice will succeed regardless of the outcome.
Explanation of the Idiom:
When someone hedges their bets, they are essentially playing it safe. The phrase comes from early betting and financial practices, where gamblers or investors would spread their money across several outcomes to make sure they wouldn’t lose everything if one option failed.
The word hedge originally meant “a protective fence” and over time it came to mean creating a safety barrier against risk.
Today, this idiom goes far beyond gambling. Politicians might hedge their bets by giving carefully balanced statements, businesses might launch products in different markets at once and individuals might apply for multiple jobs instead of just one.
This idiom captures the instinct to prepare a backup plan. It’s about caution, strategyand smart risk management.
Example Sentences:
Investor often hedge their bets by holding a mix of stocks, bonds and real estate.
Not sure if it would rain, he hedged his bets by carrying both an umbrella and sunglasses.
The startup hedged its bet by developing two version of the app in case one didn’t gain traction.
