Race against Time
Formal / Neutral
Meaning: To work urgently and quickly to complete a task or achieve something before a deadline arrives
Explanation of the Idiom:
The idiom ‘race against time’ comes from the imagery of a literal race, where competitors try to outpace each other. Here, however, the “opponent” is time itself, a finite and relentless force.
It conveys the sense of extreme urgency, pressure and the need to beat a looming deadline or avert disaster.
Historically, this phrase began appearing in English during the late 19th and early 20th centuries in reference to rescue missions, construction deadlines and scientific breakthroughs where delay could mean failure or loss of life.
Example Sentences:
Doctors were in a race against time to save the accident victim.
Engineers faced a race against time to complete the bridge before the monsoon rains.
During the exam, students felt like they were in a race against time to answer all the questions.
