Vent your spleen
Formal / Neutral
Meaning: To release anger, frustration or strong negative emotions, often by expressing them vocally or through criticism.
Explanation of the Idiom:
The idiom ‘vent your spleen’ has its origins in early medical beliefs. In classical Western medicine, particularly during the Middle Ages and Renaissance, the spleen was thought to be the seat of anger and ill temper.
Just as the liver was associated with passion and the heart with love, the spleen symbolised irritability. To ‘vent’ literally means to let air or steam escape and when paired up with spleen, it conveys the idea of releasing pent-up bitterness or rage.
The idiom entered English usage in the 16th and 17th centuries, appearing in literary works of the time. By the 19th century, it became a widely recognised idiom, not tied to literal physiology but rather to human emotions. Today the idiom carries the sense of unloading grievances or frustrations, sometimes constructively, but often in a way that is sharp or harsh towards.
Example Sentences:
The disgruntled player vented his spleen at the referee after a controversial call.
Many citizens took to social media to vent their spleen over the administration’s new policy.
The critic vented his spleen in a scathing review of the latest novel.
