On the back foot
Formal / Neutral
Meaning: To be at a disadvantage, often forced into a defensive or weaker position in an argument or situation.
Explanation of the Idiom:
The idiom ‘on the back foot’ originates from the sport of cricket, where a batsman stepping onto the back foot is typically defending against a fast or threatening delivery rather than taking an aggressive stance.
Over time, this idiom transcended its sporting roots and entered everyday English, especially in British usage, to describe anyone in a vulnerable or reactive situation.
In broader contexts, politics, business or journalism, it suggests being pressured, outmanoeuvred or compelled to respond rather than act decisively.
Writers often employ it in headlines or commentary to highlight when a company or an individual is struggling to retain control. This idiom encapsulates imbalance, a moment when strength shifts away from the subject.
Example Sentences:
The administrator found himself on the back foot after the opposition raised questions about corruption.
Global competition has placed several domestic companies and industries on the back foot.
She started the debate confidently but was soon on the back foot when challenged with hard data.
