Idiom of the Day: 29 January 2026
Cutting Corners
Formal / Neutral
Meaning: To save time or effort by doing something in the easiest way, often by neglecting proper standards or procedures.
Explanation of the Idiom:
The idiom ‘cutting corners’ originates from the literal idea of taking a shorter route by rounding or skipping the corners of a path instead of following it fully.
While such shortcuts may appear efficient, they often bypass essential steps designed to ensure safety and integrity. Over time, this phrase evolved into a metaphor for compromising on quality or thoroughness in pursuit of speed or cost savings.
Historically, this expression gained traction during the industrial age, when rapid production sometimes came at the expense of craftmanship and worker safety.
In modern usage, cutting corners is frequently invoked in discussions of governance, infrastructure, journalism, corporate policies and public policy.

Example Sentences:
Investigators concluded the bridge collapsed because contractors repeatedly cut corners during safety inspections.
The report criticised the administration for cutting corners in policy drafting to meet deadlines.
Editors warned young journalist that cutting corners on fact-checking damages credibility beyond repair.
