Idiom of the Day: 9 February 2026
Pass the Buck
Formal / Neutral
Meaning: To shift responsibility or blame onto someone else, especially to avoid facing consequences.
Explanation of the Idiom:
The idiom ‘pass the buck’ originates from the 19th century American poker games, where a marker often a buckhorn-handled knife was used to indicate whose turn it was to deal.
If a player did not wish to deal, they would pass the marker or ‘buck’ to the next person.
Over time, this practice evolved into a broader metaphor for deflecting responsibility rather than accepting it.
In modern usage, ‘pass the buck’ carries a distinctively negative connotation, implying evasion, cowardice or a lack of leadership. It is frequently used in political discourse, corporate governance, bureaucratic systems and crisis reporting to describe situations where individuals or institutions avoid accountability by shifting blame elsewhere.
Example Sentences:
During the policy failure, senior officials repeatedly passed the buck instead of accepting responsibility.
The company’s leadership chose to pass the buck to junior staff after the scandal erupted.
Voters grew disillusioned as politicians continued to pass the buck while urgent reforms stalled.
