Candidates should havepassed Class 10 (SSC / Matriculation) with pass marks in English and Mathematicsconducted by any recgonised Board of School Education by the Indian Government / State Government or Union Territories in India. Candidates having equivalent qualification from any other board are not eligible to apply for the engagement of GDS in India Post.
Candidates should have studied the local language of the state / union territory at least up to Class 10 from a recognised board.
There are some special provisions in respect of knowledge of the local language for the engagement of Gramin Dak Sevaks in the states of Arunachal Pradesh, Goa, Nagaland and Sikkim.
Candidates applying for the India Post Recruitment 2026 for the engagement of Gramin Dak Sevaks in the Department of Posts should have adequate knowledge in computers, knowledge of cycling and adequate means of livelihood.
The applicants will be shortlisted for engagement to the post of Gramin Dak Sevak or Dak Sevak in various circles on the basis of a system-generated merit list.
This merit list will be prepared on the basis of marks obtained/conversion of Grades/Points to marks (as explained in the India Post GDS 2026 Notification PDF) in the Secondary School Examination of 10thstandard of approved Boards aggregated to percentage to the accuracy of four decimals.
Passing all the subjects as per the respective approved board norms is mandatory for India Post GDS 2026 Selection Process.
• For applicants, where their Secondary School Examination of 10th standard mark sheet has marks or marks and Grade/Points both, only their total marks will be worked out by taking into account the marks obtained in all compulsory and elective/optional subjects (other than extra subjects, if any). This will ensure that applicants with higher marks get selected for the India Post GDS 2026 Official Recruitment.
• For applicants who have only grades subject-wise, their marks will be derived for each subject (compulsory and elective subjects but not extra subjects), by applying the multiplying factor of 9.5 in the following manner as indicated in the India Post GDS 2026 Notification:
• In the case of the mark lists containing the Grades/Points, marks will be reckoned by taking the conversion of Grades and points with the multiplication factor (9.5) against the maximum points or grade as 100.
• Where the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) is also provided for applicants, the marks will be derived by multiplying the CGPA by 9.5. Where individual grades in each subject, as well as CGPA, is given, the higher of the two marks will be taken.
• Applicants having both marks and grades in their marks sheets have to apply with their marks only. In case if any applicant applies with their grades instead of marks, his/her application will be liable or disqualification for the India Post GDS 2026 Official Recruitment.
• In case of a tie among India Post GDS 2026 applicants, the merit would be decided on the basis of the following priority order as mentioned in the India Post GDS 2026Notification: Date of Birth (Older in age), ST trans-woman, ST female, SC trans-woman, SC female, OBC trans-woman, OBC female, EWS trans-woman, EWS female, UR trans-woman, UR female, ST trans-male, ST male, SC trans-male, SC male, OBC trans-male, OBC male, EWS trans-male, EWS male, UR trans-male, UR male.

The candidates shortlisted for the post of India Post Gramin Dak Sevak are paid emoluments in the form of time-related continuity allowance (TRCA).
Candidates who join the Department of Post as a Branch Postmaster (BPM) will get a starting TRCA slab of ₹ 12,000 to ₹ 29,280 per month.
