Who is C.P. Radhakrishnan?

C.P. Radhakrishnan is the new and current Vice President of India (as of September 2025). He took oath as the 15th Vice President of India on 12 September 2025 in New Delhi.

He previously served as the Governor of Maharashtra from July 2024 to September 2025 and the Governor of Jharkhand from February 2023 to July 2024. During this period, he also held additional charge as the Governor of Telangana and the Lieutenant Governor of the Union Territory of Puducherry for brief periods.

He is an active member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayasevak Sangh (RSS) since his youth. He was elected to the Lok Sabha as the Member of Parliament from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in 1998 and re-elected again in 1999.

He was also the state President of the BJP in Tamil Nadu from 2003 to 2006.

He succeeded Jagdeep Dhankar, after Dhankar resigned citing ill health.

Vice Presidential Election 2025

The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the seventeenth (17th) Vice Presidential Election of India to be held on 9 September 2025. The members of both the houses of the Indian Parliament voted to elect the Vice President of India.

The Vice President of India is elected by an electoral college which include members of the Rajya Sabha as well as the Lok Sabha using the single transferrable vote. The nominated members of the Upper House are also eligible to vote in the Vice-Presidential Election of India.

The ruling NDA coalition has fielded C.P. Radhakrishnan and the Opposition has former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy as its VP nominee.

This Vice-Presidential Election of India was conducted as a result of the resignation of Jagdeep Dhankar citing ill health. Jagdeep Dhankar resigned on the opening day of the Monsoon Session of the Parliament in July 2025, two years before his tenure’s end.

According to Article 68 (2) of the Indian Constitution, an election to fill a vacancy in the Office of the Vice President occurring due to his death, resignation or removal or otherwise shall be held as soon as possible from the date of vacancy.

The full electoral college comprised of 788 valid electors. With six vacancies in Rajya Sabha and 1 in the Lok Sabha, this tally was reduced to 781 valid electors in the Vice-Presidential Election 2025. Out of these 767 electors cast their votes on 9 September 2025.

14 votes were found to be invalid and 14 MPs abstained from voting in the Vice President Election.

Early Life of C.P. Radhakrishnan

C.P. Radhakrishnan was born on 4 May 1957 in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu to C.K. Ponnusamy and K. Janaki.

He earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration (BBA) from V.O. Chidambaram College in Tuticorin, Tamil Nadu.

He started as an RSS Swayamsevak and associated with the RSS since the age of 16.

Before entering into politics and public life, C.P. Radhakrishnan had a long and successful stint as a garment exporter.

Political Career of C.P. Radhakrishnan

C.P. Radhakrishnan became the State Executive Committee Member of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1974. He joined the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) after the party was founded in 1980, becoming an aide to Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

In 1996, he was appointed the Secretary of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Tamil Nadu.

He was elected as a Member of Parliament (MP) from Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu in 1998. He was re-elected to the Lok Sabha again in 1999.

During his tenure as a Member of Parliament, C.P. Radhakrishnan served as the Chairman of the Parliamentary Standing Committee for Textiles.

He was also a Member of the Parliamentary Committee for Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs) from 1998 to 2004 and a Member of the Parliamentary Consultative Committee for Finance.

He was a member of the Parliamentary Special Committee investigating the Stock Exchange Scam.

In 2004, C.P. Radhakrishnan addressed the UN General Assembly as part of the Parliamentary Delegation from India.

He was also a member of the first Parliamentary delegation to Taiwan.

Between 2004 and 2007, he was the state President of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Tamil Nadu.

In 2016, he was appointed as the Chairman of the Coir Board of India and held the position for four years. Under his leadership, coir exports from India reached an all-time high of ₹2532 crores.
