6 August – Hiroshima Day

On 6 August in 2025, the 80th anniversary of the first use of nuclear weapon on Hiroshima, Japan was observed as ‘Hiroshima Day’.

During the Second World War, the United States dropped the first atomic bomb codenamed ‘Little Boy’ atomic bomb on the Japanese city of Hiroshima on 6th August 1945.

Hiroshima Day is observed annually on 6 August to commemorate the victims of the world's first nuclear attack in Hiroshima, Japan.

Hiroshima Day is also observed as the Anti-nuclear Day or the A-Bomb Day.

7 August – National Handloom Day in India

To honour the legacy of the handloom sector that played a vital role in India's freedom movement, the Indian Government declared 7th August as the National Handloom Day in India in 2015.

This day is observed every year to honour the Indian weaving community, recognise their contribution to India's socio-economic development and renew our collective resolve to preserve and promote our handloom heritage.

The 11th National Handloom Day was celebrated on 7th August 2025 at the Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi graced by the Hon'ble Indian President.

8 August – Quit India Movement Day

India celebrates 8th August every year as the Quit India Movement Day.

The Quit India Movement Day is also known as August Kranti Diwas.

This day commemorates the Quit India Movement which demanded the immediate end of the British rule in India.

Launched by Mahatma Gandhi on 8 August 1942 during the All India Congress Committee Session in Bombay, the Quit India Movement demanded the immediate end of the British rule following the failure of Cripps Mission.

This year in 2025 marks the 83rd anniversary of the Quit India Movement.

9 August – Nagasaki Day

Every year on 9 August, Nagasaki Day is observed to mark the devastating bombing of the city of Nagasaki in Japan by the United States in 1945 during the World War II.

This was the second and final time nuclear weapons have been used in warfare to date.

The International Day of the World’s Indigenous Peoples is observed by the United Nations every year on 9 August.

This day aims to raise awareness and protect the rights of the world’s indigenous population.

The theme for 2025 is ‘Indigenous Peoples and AI: Defending Rights, Shaping Futures’.

The United Nations has estimated that there are more than 476 million indigenous peoples in the world living across 90 countries. They make up 6 per cent of the world’s population.

12 August – International Youth Day

International Youth Day is commemorated annually on 12 August by the United Nations.

This day raises awareness of the challenges and opportunities facing young people around the world and serves as a platform for promoting youth engagement and celebrate their contributions to the society.

19 August – World Humanitarian Day

The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution designating 19 August every year as the World Humanitarian Day.

This day recognises the humanitarian personnel across the world and to remember those who have laid their lives working for humanitarian causes.

19 August marks the day on which the then Special Representative of the UN Secretary General to Iraq, Sergio Vieria de Mello and 21 of his colleagues were killed in a bombing in the UN Headquarters in Baghdad, Iraq.

This day is commemorated to promote one of India’s oldest languages, Sanskrit and marks the birth anniversary of Panini, the renowned Sanskrit scholar and grammarian.

Sanskrit was declared as a Classical Language of India in the year 2005 by the Indian Government.

The first observance of the World Sanskrit Day was celebrated in 1969 by the Indian Government.

Uttarakhand became the first state in India to make Sanskrit an official language of the state alongside Hindi in 2010. Himachal Pradesh became the second state in 2019 and granted the official language status to Sanskrit.

29 August – National Sports Day

National Sports Day is celebrated every year in India on 29 August to honour and remember the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand.

Major Dhyan Chand is India’s iconic hockey player known as the ‘Hockey Wizard’ and lead India to three consecutive Olympic gold medals in 1928, 1932 and 1936.

The Indian Government announced to celebrate his birth anniversary as the National Sports Day in India annually on 29th August.
