The Union Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has been the nodal agency for protecting and improving the environment and safeguarding the forest and wildlife in India under Article 48A of the Indian Constitution. These national parks, wildlife sanctuaries, conservation reserves and community reserves are not only safe havens for wildlife but also provide a plethora of benefits to humans.
National Park is defined as an area notified by the State / Central Government in India by reason of it ecological, faunal, floral, geomorphological or zoological association or importance, needed for the purpose of protecting and propagating or developing wildlife therein or its environment. A national park in India is the highest level of protection that can be given to an area under the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
No human-related activity is permitted inside the realms of the national park except for the ones permitted by the Chief Wildlife Warden of the particular state under conditions given in the Wild Life (Protection) Act, 1972.
Once designated, a National Park cannot be downgraded to the status of a ‘Wildlife Sanctuary’.

Jim Corbet National Park in Uttarakhand is the first national park of India. It was established in 1936 as the Hailey National Park. It was the also the first national park in mainland Asian continent.
There are three marine national parks (Mahatma Gandhi (Wandoor) National Park, Gulf of Kachchh Marine National Park, Guld of Mannar Marine National Park) in India that are designated to protect coral reefs, marine turtles, dugongs and other marine creatures.
Hemis National Park in Ladakh is the largest national park in India. It covers an area of 3350 square kilometres. This is very famous for snow leopards.
Hemis National Park is also the highest-altitude national park in India.
South Button Island National Park in the Union Territory of Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the smallest national park in India. It covers an area of just 0.03 square kilometres.
Keibul Lamjao National Park in Manipur is popular as the only floating national park in the world. Located on Loktak Lake, it floats on phumdis. This national park is also home to the endangered Sangai deer, also called as the Dancing Deer.
Gir National Park in Gujarat is the only place in the world where Asiatic Lions roam freely in the wild.
The union territories of Puducherry, Lakshadweep, Delhi NCR, Chandigarh Dardra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu doesn’t have a national park within their territory.
29 Feb 2025: Namdapha National Park in Arunachal Pradesh has recorded the first sighting of an adult male elephant in 12 years.
5 Feb 2025: Five more cheetahs were released into the world by Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav from Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh. They were released from their enclosures into the wild.
14 Feb 2025: A cheetah at Madhya Pradesh’s Kuno National Park gave birth to two cubs, bringing the total cheetah numbers to 26, including 14 cheetah cubs.
9 Mar 2025: Madhav National Park in Madhya Pradesh becomes India's 58th tiger reserve. It is also the 9th tiger reserve from Madhya Pradesh to get this recognition.
